Hello dr, I am lucy, my baby
is 7 and half month old now, she gets cough and cold very often, till now she has got it 5
times, is it common and should it be treated. |
| Dr.
Ravindra Chittal |
Hi Lucy. Tell me more about
your baby. Is she on breast milk or fresh milk or formula feeds |
| Lucy |
My daughter, sometimes gets
fever, but olny her head is very warm all other parts are normal, is this fever .
My baby is on breast milk, and she also takes some solids like rice boiled with some
vegetables etc. not yet cow's milk. |
| Dr.
Ravindra Chittal |
Lucy babies less than 2 yrs
have warm head and abdomen because of increased blood supply to the growing brain and
liver. This is not fever.
Lucy breast milk is a guarantee against severe infections and allergies. so rest assured
what your baby has are frequent benign viral colds which are not serious. All the same
avoid using oil and perfumes, powders on her face and hair. |

My wife tells me I worry a
lot. I do about my child getting brain fever, every time he has fever. What are the
chances? |
| Dr.
Ravindra Chittal |
Hi Ramesh Your concern about
brain fever each time your son has a temperature is uncalled for. Brain fever known as
meningitis or encephalitis is a specific disease caused by specific viruses or bacteria.
Many of these can be prevented by vaccinations. |
| Chander |
Hi! Doctor, I have seen that
dosages given on the bottles of fever syrups hardly bring down the fever. What to do? Also
is AC good for a child with fever? |
| Dr.
Ravindra Chittal |
Chander the doses given on
the bottle are general recommendations and may not necessarily work for all kids. It's
safer to ask your doctor before giving such drugs.... |
| Sunita |
Doctor, my child has had one
convulsion, can he get another. |
| Dr.
Ravindra Chittal |
Sunita, How old is your
baby? What was the age and cause of first convulsion. |
| Sunita |
My baby is 1 and a half
years old
What precautions can I take ? |
| Dr.
Ravindra Chittal |
Sunita with due precautions
like sponging and use of antifever medicines you can prevent this |
| Sunita |
Thank you doctor
My child also has a permanent cold, what could be the cause? |
| Dr.
Ravindra Chittal |
Sunita, There could be
several causes for a persistent cold,Do see a doctor. |
| Sunita |
She has been treated several
times, but it still continues |
| Dr.
Ravindra Chittal |
Sunita, I would want to know
more about the onset of the cold. whether she responds to treatment and has frequent
relapses ? Is there any positive family history? |
| Sunita |
The relapses are very
frequent |
| Dr.
Ravindra Chittal |
Sunita, I presume your baby
has an allergic cold. Try considering allergy to things in immediate environment such as
carpets, perfumes, soft toys, oil and powder. Medicines will only relieve her symptoms |
| Sunita |
I think she is allergic to
dust, what can I do about it |
| Dr.
Ravindra Chittal |
Sunita, Keep her away from
the carpet, soft toys, vacuum clean the floor and the curtains |
| Sunita |
Thank u.

| Nisha Hitesh |
Doctorji, I am from Delhi.
During summer my child gets very high fever, upto 103. Can he get fit? he is 5 year. Thank
You Doctorji! |
| Dr.
Ravindra Chittal |
Nisha, Febrile convulsions
occur in acute fever not due to heat fever. If your child has not had convulsions till now
he's unlikely to get them now. All the same take care
|
| Heena |
Should all fevers be
treated? |
| Dr.
Ravindra Chittal |
Heena, I've answered it
before. But I'll tell you again. Fever above 100 may be treated if the child is cranky and
uncomfortable.... |
| Heena |
I thank u doctor.My child
has got 1 convulsion he is 4 yrs old can he get it again? if yes? can we do something
about it? |
| Dr.
Ravindra Chittal |
Heena, yes your child can
have a convulsion again when he has high fever. With due care you can prevent this,
sponge his forehead, hands and legs and administer antifever medicines |
| Heena |
Thank u doctor!
Are all the sponges available in the market effective? |
| Dr.
Ravindra Chittal |
Heena, you misunderstood.
Sponging means wiping your child's body with a wet towel which should not be ice water but
room temperature water would do. I hope i'm clear |
| Heena |
Thanks Doctor, nice talking to you! |
| Neelima |
I'm from Nagpur and the heat

| Ruchita |
Hello Doctor, Is fever
dangerous |
| Dr.
Ravindra Chittal |
Any baby with fever of above
100 may be treated if the baby is very uncomfortable and has history of convulsions with fever in the past. Fever below
100 may be body's normal response to ..... |
| Ruchita |
Why should fever cause a
convulsion ?? |
| Dr.
Ravindra Chittal |
Children below 6 yrs due to
a maturing brain respond to fever in a adverse way leading to a febrile convulsion. More
commonly in boys than girls.... |
| Rani |
What degree of fever should
be treated? |
| Dr.
Ravindra Chittal |
....Simultaneously
administration of antifever medicines would prevent the fever from getting out of hand and
helps longterm management, more common if family history is positive. Convulsions below 6 mths and above 6 yrs
may not be due to fever itself and needs to be urgently investigated |
| Rani |
Should we sponge first or
directly give medicines? |
| Dr.
Ravindra Chittal |
Sponging is a quicker way of
controlling fever especially on the head and palms and soles which are areas the body
normally sweats from |
